Coaches and players singled out the De La Salle University (DLSU) as the team to beat in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 of the men’s basketball tournament.
La Salle players celebrate after winning against UST in the finals series game of men’s basketball season 76
FEU coach Nash Racela, UST coach Boy Sablan, Adamson coach Franz Pumaren, UP coach Bo Perasol, NU coach Eric Altamirano, and Ateneo coach Sandy Arespacochaga expect difficult plays from Green Archers now that 6’8” Cameroonian Ben Mbala, Jason Perkins, Andrei Caracut, Prince Rivero and veteran Jeron Teng come together to play for the team.
Even Paul Varilla of the UE Red Warriors believes that all teams should prepare for what La Salle can do in this season’s basketball.
For DLSU rookie Aldin Ayo, however, they should watch out for the FEU Tamaraws since they hold the championship title.
Meanwhile, FEU coach Nash Racela is not bothered by the predictions for his team to which he lost 6 veteran players.
“I respect what they believe. FEU has always been under the radar. I don’t like that we’re the talk of the town or considered favorite. We just let our performance speak for ourselves,” expressed Racela.
FEU coach is hopeful and focused on the play itself regardless of the title.
“We just have to give our best. There’s no pressure on our part even though we’re the defending champion,” he added.
The UAAP Season 79 opened its doors on September 3, Sunday at the UST grounds in Espanya, Manila.
