Pia’s confidently beautiful triumph in 2016 earned her and the nation an “honor and responsibility” as the Department of Tourism (DOT) announced the Philippines as the official venue for Miss Universe 2017 .
FYI, this is not the country’s first time to host Miss U, but there are several things as to why you should get excited for January next year.
The long wait is over!
After 23 years, Manila gets to host the Miss Universe pageant for the third time! This is one great news for pageant enthusiasts out there. It is, indeed, both an “honor and responsibility” for the whole nation. Let’s just hope and pray that traffic won’t ruin things throughout the pageant season. Fingers are crossed!
2. More tourists here and there
Like Malaysia, Vietnam, and other Asian countries, the Philippines can gain more visitors with just the occasion itself. This may be bad news for some airports around the Metro but having Miss Universe in the country would help promote local attractions and regional products that are truly world-class. Big and small-time businesses can both benefit from the surge of tourists once the pageant kicks-off.
3. Zero expense for the government
This announcement wouldn’t take place if not for the approval of the newly-elected President. Duterte, as everyone knows, prefers simplicity over lux. Fortunately for the government, private companies (Okada, Solar, PAL, and SM, among many others) are the ones to shoulder expenses of the said event. It’s a win-win situation for both the country and the people’s taxes.
4. A longer media exposure
It’s about time that the world calls the country by its real name, and not by a book in the New Testament.
Remember last year’s pageant? Steve Harvey mistaken Philippines, the country, for Philippians in his controversial tweet that said,
Filipinas have been front-runners in the Miss Universe almost every year. Not only can we promote our “hospitable” nature and joyful personality, people can also know about the beautiful country that is the Phi-li-ppines.
5. Back-to-back victory (most probably)
In some cases, the host country happens to crown its pageant representative. This might just be the case in next year’s Miss Universe. There’s a big chance that Pia gives the crown to fellow Binibinin Pilipinas-Universe, Maxine Medina. Let’s cross our fingers on this one!
When a Filipino flies abroad to represent the country, the whole nation becomes united more than ever. So, here’s to a successful coronation night and hoping that Miss Philippines gets to be crowned Miss Universe 2017!
